Amazon launches in Australia

Amazon’s dedicated Australian website has launched with a free delivery offer for customers spending over AU$49. The online powerhouse is courting Australian retailers to sell via its marketplace and is expected to claim a significant share of current, relatively low, online spend in the country. A fulfilment centre, spanning 24,000 sq.m. to support the business in its initial stages has been opened in the Melbourne area and the new Australian venture is being headed up by Rocco Braeuniger who was previously director of consumables for Amazon Germany.

Many Australian consumers are quite used to shopping from Amazon’s US site and the locally supported offering is expected to attract a much larger customer base. Local retailers who have not enjoyed good trading conditions of late are, understandably, concerned by the new competition on the block.
